Colnago Carbitubo Pursuit Pista “The Early Carbon Era”

“In the early years of using carbon as a frame material, it was known for being expensive and not necessarily simple to work with. The monocoque frame still belonged to a distant world in 1975, when the first carbon frame (mixed with aluminium) was built in the USA . However, Colnago ventured forward with its own ideas of a carbon future. The Colnago Carbitubo Pista model was presented at the 1988 IFMA (Internationale Fahrrad- und Motorrad- Ausstellung). Its carbon tubes came from Ferrari, a worthy supplier for a bike whose sole requirement is speed. Its carbon tubes were bonded to one another using aluminium lugs and they could, as you may suspect, become detached at the bond when under stress. From a purely aesthetic point of view, however, the TWO SLENDER down tubes are beautiful. There were under twenty machines produced. Structurally, the aluminium lugs of the Carbitubo Pista were virtually identical to those used by the wellknown manufacturer Alan, who was also producing frames made from carbon tubes and aluminium lugs. To this day Colnago is probably the most famous bicycle brand, and a book listing all the victories won on Colnago bikes would run to several volumes.”
